Our Story
Woodhill TNR and Cat Rescue
Woodhill TNR and Cat Rescue was born out of necessity right where our backyard meets the Rocky River Metroparks. Living on the edge of the valley, we witnessed a crisis unfold firsthand: cats were being abandoned regularly, and when the local TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs vanished, the population began to expand at an alarming, unsustainable rate.
Born from Necessity
When help wasn’t available through traditional channels, we decided to be the solution ourselves. After a year of reaching out to various rescues and city officials without receiving a response, we realized that if we wanted to protect these animals and our community, we had to take the initiative.
The stakes were higher than just "homeless cats." In the wild, these colonies act as a lure for coyotes, creating a dangerous environment not only for the cats but for humans and their pets surrounding the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation.
The "Kitten Math" Problem
Unchecked breeding is the root of the crisis. Kittens can reach sexual maturity and begin having their own litters as young as 4 months of age.
-
A single female can have at least two litters per year.
-
Without intervention, a small colony can grow by dozens in just twelve months.
-
By focusing on sterilization and rescue, we break this cycle before it starts.
From Feral to "Family-Ready"
Our mission goes far beyond just getting cats off the streets. We invest significant time and resources into rehabilitating every cat that enters our care, including those you see today like Ina, Shadow, and Tipper.
"It’s incredible to watch a cat who once lived in the shadows of the Metroparks adapt to the comforts of indoor life."
The transformation is often total. Cats that were once wary of humans have adapted beautifully to domestication—in fact, many of them have become quite fond of the "spoiled" life, preferring scheduled meal times, fresh water, toys and soft laps over the cold and dangerous life in the valley.
Our Promise
Every cat at Woodhill Cat Rescue is treated as a member of our own family until they find a family of their own. Whether it’s providing life-saving surgery for cats like Eva or finding the perfect "bonded pair" match, we are committed to ensuring these resilient animals never have to fend for themselves again.
